Painted Turtle

Our Painted Turtles

We have two painted turtles. Both of their genders are unknown. They are also nameless. The zoo acquired these two turtles by a donation.

Painted Turtle Size

Painted Turtles are between six to eight inches long. Females are larger than the males.

Painted Turtle Life Span

Painted Turtles live for 25-30 years in captivity.  They can live for 50 years in the wild.

Painted Turtle Housing

In the wild, they like to live near freshwater such as ponds, lakes, and creeks. They live from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean and from Mexico to Canada. In captivity they need a depth of water that is twice the width of the their shell.  They need a place to hide under the water as well.

Painted Turtle Food

In the wild, they like to eat fish, insects, worms, plants, and aquatic plants. In captivity, they eat vegetables, fruits, crickets, worms, and commercial turtle food.

Painted Turtle Lighting & Temperature Requirements

They need a bulb to bask under and dry off. During the day they need 85 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Painted Turtle Substrate

They do not need a substrate. They live in a water tank with 50-70 gallons of water with a floating turtle dock. Adult turtles should have 20 gallons of water for one turtle and 10 more gallons for each additional turtle.
