Our Map Turtle
Scovill Zoo has one Map Turtle. His name is One-Eyed Jack. He is a male that is at least 15 years old.
Our Map Turtle
He is approximately 15 inches or the size of a dinner plate. Other Map Turtles vary in size. Females are usually 7-10 inches while males are usually 3-6 inches.
Map Turtle Life Span
Map Turtles live 15 to 20 years in captivity. They are able to live up to 25 years in the wild.
Map Turtle Housing
Map Turtles require filtration and oxygenated water. They also enjoy basking so it is necessary to include rocks and logs to allow them to come out of the water for long periods of time.
Map Turtle Food
Map Turtles eat snails, crayfish, insects, and krill. They are omnivores. This means they eat plants as well as meat. Their favorite plants are dark leafy greens.
Map Turtle Lighting & Temperature Requirements
Map Turtles require heat lamps while in a tank. They enjoy an air temperature of 84 to 94 degrees Fahrenheit. The best water temperature for Map Turtles is 72 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
Map Turtle Substrate
Map Turtles are freshwater turtles. The water needs to be flowing. Underwater plant matter is desirable. Rocks and logs are necessary for basking.
