Blood Python


Our Blood Python

Scovill Zoo has 2 blood pythons (Python brongersmai), and they are named Scales and Blad.  Both of them are females and came from private breeders. Each is around 2 years old.  The blood python is non-venomous constrictors. 

Blood Python Size

The blood python is normally 4 to 5 feet long.  The record size is 6 feet long.  Females are usually bigger than males, but males have longer tails.  It typically weighs 12-20 lbs but has been reported to weigh 45 pounds. They are short and thick snakes.  

Blood Python Life Span

The blood python's life span is about 15 to 20 years, but can live for 35 years.   

Blood Python Housing

Their natural habitats are Southeast Asia, Vietnam, and Sumatra. They live on the edges of jungles near streams and rivers. They are kept in a 3 and 1/2 feet by 1 and 1/2 feet aquarium.  The enclosure will grow in size as they do. 

Blood Python Food

The blood python eats rodents such as mice and rats.  They will occasionally eat birds. 

Blood Python Lighting & Temperature Requirements

The blood python prefers a temperature of 78 to 82 degrees.  They need no special lightning. 

Blood Python Substrate

The blood python prefer chipped aspen in their enclosure.  Paper can also be used.  A water bowl allows the snakes to soak.
