Arugs Monitor

Our Arugs Monitor

We have one female and her name is Keuka. She arrived at the zoo in the year of 2009. She is 4 and a half feet long. She is eight and a half years old. Keuka came from the state of New York.

Arugs Monitor Size

Males can reach 4 and a half feet long, whereas females reach 3 and a half feet long.

Arugs Monitor Life Span

In captivity they live for 12 to 20 years.

Arugs Monitor Housing

They live in the wild in Indonesia, New Guinea, and Australia. In their exhibit they would need a vivarium at least 8 foot by 4 feet, and at least 5 feet tall.  The exhibit should have logs, cork tubes, and stones on the cage. They also need a pool or a tub in their cage so they can swim.  They need the humidity levels to be between 70 to 80 percent.

Arugs Monitor Food

They are carnivores. They eat rodents, insects, fish, baby chicks, and worms.

Arugs Monitor Lighting & Temperature Requirements

They need 75 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit to be comfortable.  Also a basking temperature of 115 degrees should be provided. Also they need lights turned on for a least 10 hours a day.  They need humidity levels to be around 65%.

Arugs Monitor Substrate

They need 2 feet of substrate because they love to dig. Their enclosure should measure 8 by 4 feet with sand or soil to allow digging. However, commercial potting soil is not good for the lizards.
